Dear Sir,

A well-scripted story but presented sensationally.

Movements of aircraft on ground or in the skies of India are as safe as in any other part of the world. As a matter of fact, Indian Pilots and Air Traffic Controllers are one of the most qualified and capable professionals in the world. This is evident from the huge variety of terrain and weather that they operate in. The Indian airports also vary widely in terms of infrastructure available (they range from ILS equipped to simple visual airports where even radar is not there).

For Controllers, I feel handling of more than 550 movements per day on a single runway at Delhi is a landmark in itself (how many airports in world can claim this kind of record?) which speaks volumes about the efficiency of the Indian Air Traffic Controllers. Air-miss is an aviation idiom and the number of airprox incidents in India is much less than most other more technologically advanced countries. To put the issue in perspective, let me give you the statistics of airprox incidents in a few other countries: Canada experienced 153 airprox incidents in year 2003, another 223 airproxes in year 2004. UK reported 180 airprox incidents from January till November 2005. US experienced more than 100 airprox incidents in 2005.

I feel that the honourable Minister of Civil Aviation and the aviation authorities are concerned on the current explosive growth in Indian civil aviation and measures are being taken to cope up with the related limitations.

What we need is more focused time bound solutions in the areas of critical limitations.

Let us join together to make the Indian aviation industry the leading economic driver towards a sound Indian economy.

INDIAN SKY IS SAFE, LET US TRY TO MAKE IT MORE EFFICIENT.

Regards and best wishes,

R K Singh
General Secretary
